Unable to write to database because database would exceed its disk quota

Problem
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server displays the following error:
Unable to write to database because database would exceed its disk quota.

Cause
This problem has multiple causes.
Cause 1
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends an all points bulletin (APB) for an email message that is not delivered to the BlackBerry smartphone of the BlackBerry smartphone user whose IBM Lotus Domino mail file is exceeding the quota limit. The APB includes the following error message:
unable to process message
The email message may be in Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) format and include attachments. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server makes a request to open the message document and if the message document is not in Rich Text Format, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server makes a request for the IBM Lotus Domino messaging server to convert the email message to Rich Text Format (generally from MIME format). When the IBM Lotus Domino messaging server converts a message to Rich Text Format, it needs sufficient free space in the mail file to expand the email message. When the IBM Lotus Domino messaging server reports that it is not able to process the request, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server reports the Unable to write to database because database would exceed its disk quota error.

Cause 2
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server attempts to save a copy of an outgoing email message from the BlackBerry smartphone for the BlackBerry smartphone user whose IBM Lotus Domino mail file is exceeding the quota limit.
For example, an email message is sent from the BlackBerry smartphone and the Save Copy of Sent Folders setting is set to True on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for the BlackBerry smartphone user. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will send the outgoing email message using the mail.box of the IBM Lotus Domino server that is running the BlackBerry Enterprise Server task. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server also attempts to save a copy of the outgoing email message in the BlackBerry smartphone user's mail file. Since the mail file size has exceeded its quota, the IBM Lotus Domino mail server is not able to save the copy of the outgoing email message and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server reports the Unable to write to database because database would exceed its disk quota error.

Resolution
Decrease the mail file size so that it is below the quota limit. Compacting the mail file may release any white space and decrease the mail file size. For steps on compacting, see KB02207.
It is also possible to remove the quota limit on the mail file.

Workaround
For Cause 1
Setting the Preference for Incoming Message setting on the affected BlackBerry smartphone user's Person document to Prefer Notes rich text format may mitigate the error until one of the resolutions can be applied. Please consult IBM support for more details on the Preference for Incoming Message option.
